AL KHAMIS MOSQUE
The first mosque of the Gulf countries, proving the strong link between Islam and Bahrain. The Arab tribes of the archipelago were among the first to embrace the message of the Prophet Mohammed. So they built a mosque in 692 in the village of Khamis. The building was restored several times, the first time in the xie century, then the xiiith and XIV centuries. The ruins visible today are therefore the Middle Ages. The Government has recently undertaken to modernize the tourist infrastructure of this historic site for the Bahrain culture. We can see colonnades, a minaret, and arches. The Mihrab, which indicates the direction of Mecca, dates from the twelfth century. The ensemble was built with materials found on site, mainly coral limestone. Bahrain often visits, as a return to the origins of their culture. If the mosque no longer welcomes prayer, it remains busy on Friday. Go ahead on weekdays, so you can visit it without anyone around.
