ZONA ARQUEOLÓGICA DE CHINKULTIC
Area that includes four architectural groups and has been occupied for long periods of time in Chinkultic
The Chinkultic area includes four architectural groups: plaza Hundida is crossed as one enters the site, whose configuration evokes that of the great Maya cities of the classical era; the Las Lajas building, slightly upstream from a group of circular altars, is characterized by the use of large stone blocks that echo those used at the Mixe-Zoque site of Izapa; the Great Platform houses the Juego de Pelota; and the Acropolis majestically dominates the whole from the top of a hill, including the Cenote Azul.
The site has been occupied over long periods of time, crossing many of the cultural stages of the region: from the Late Preclassic (200 BC) to the Postclassic (900-1200 AD), which suggests that the city survived both the decline of the Mixe-Zoque civilization and the collapse of the great Maya cities of the Usumacinta region around the year 900. Its architectural heyday, however, corresponds to the Late Classic period (AD 600-900), as do most of the best-known sites in the Chiapas region. It was probably to play a significant role in the geopolitical recomposition of the region around Los Altos de Chiapas. The first archaeological excavations of the Chinkultic site took place in 1966, under the direction of an American. More extensive excavations were carried out by a team of Mexican archaeologists in 1970, who found remains in the cenote.
