ZONA ARQUEOLÓGICA IZAPA
Site attributed to the mokaya culture presenting certain characteristics which one will find at the Mayas of the classic period
The site is attributed to the Mokaya culture, whose representatives are said to have been among the first peoples to settle down. Occupied from at least 1500 BC to 1200 AD, it displays some of the same characteristics as the Maya of the Classic period. The layout and orientation of the site suggest a systematic planning around mounds where squares and patios were built; the reliefs and stelae represent characters and deities known to later Maya civilizations.
