FORT PHIL KEARNY
At the end of the nineteenth century, the Bozeman trail linked Laramie to Wyoming in Bozeman in Montana. In order to ensure the safety of migrants, several military posts were built on the road crossing Indian territories. The largest of the three forts built is Fort Phil Kearny, which was established in 1866 near Buffalo. Its mission is to protect prospector and traveler convoys en route to Montana. The Fort was a 6 hectare area protected by a wooden palisade of nearly 2.50 meters high. He is famous for hosting two battles: the one of Fetterman in 1866 between Captain William Fetterman and a coalition of Cheyenne, Arapahos and Sioux, and Wagon Box Fight's attack in 1867 during which 32 loggers and guards were attacked by the Indian soldiers of Chief Red Cloud. Following the Treaty of Laramie, the forts were abandoned and Fort Phil Kearny was burned shortly after the departure of American soldiers. Since 1962, the site has been registered in the National Register of Historic Sites. His visit is an opportunity to return to dramatic episodes of the tormented history of the conquest of the West.
