Fort Cabo de Rama owes its name to the hero of the Hindu Ramayana epic, Lord Rama, who is said to have lived here with his wife Sita during his period of exile. The origins of the fort date back to before the arrival of the Portuguese, who finally took possession of it in 1763. They added to the existing structure 21 barracks, an officers' quarters and a chapel. The latter still attracts the faithful who come to pray to Saint Anthony. The fort has been unoccupied since 1955 and is slowly deteriorating. From the fort, the view of the bay is quite striking.
