PENNSYLVANIA STATE CAPITOL
The Pennsylvania State Capitol is marked by its Fine Arts architectural style and dome inspired by that of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. This building, which is the third in Harrisburg to hold the function of a capitol, was built between 1902 and 1906, and is the seat of the Pennsylvania government. With several sculptures, including the gold sculpture superbly perched on its dome, stained glass windows and paintings, it is sometimes considered a palace of the arts in its own right, highlighting the talents of local craftsmen who have been put to use as a priority. When President Theodore Roosevelt discovered it in 1906, he said that it was the most beautiful capitol he had ever seen. Start your visit with the Welcome Center in the east wing, then take part in a guided tour to learn more about the architecture and history of the building.
