DVOR VELIKI TABOR CASTLE
Stately residences in the northwest of Zagreb with exhibition rooms for local artists.
Just 20 minutes (11.5 km) from the town of Pregrada, north-west of Zagreb, the most imposing castle in the Hrvatsko Zagorje region has a fairytale feel! The first fort was built in the 12th century and then, for military and domestic purposes, was transformed into a seigniorial residence in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the local masters, the Rattkajs, influenced by Italian models, added new round towers.
Inside, a chapel is dedicated to the legend of Veronika Desinička, a beautiful but impoverished village girl with whom Prince Fridrik Celje fell in love. Legend has it that, wishing to make their love official through marriage, the heir suffered the wrath of the royal family. The unfortunate woman was walled up alive in the castle. Even today, it is said that her moans can be heard on the evenings of the full moon. An exposed skull is even said to belong to Veronika. The castle's other rooms serve as exhibition halls for local artists, as well as a room dedicated to the Second World War, when the castle became an orphanage run by nuns.
Practical information. Guided tours are available (maximum 30 people per group), from €27 for a simple tour in English, and €33 for a tour in costume. Please note that parts of the château are currently being restored and are therefore partially closed to the public. Please enquire before your visit.
