Located about 30 minutes by bus, east of Sasayama Castle, this village is a curiosity. The inhabitants have truly taken control of their neighbourhood to offer themselves a living environment conducive to pleasure and well-being. The main street, lined with Edo period shopping houses, most of which have been renovated, runs through the countryside and rice fields. The inhabitants have even launched their own brand, Fukusumi Zero Circle. The concept of their neighbourhood is to bring together craftsmen and businesses from different fields, thus creating a pleasant neighbourhood life adapted to everyday life, with an objective of sustainable development and respect for local products and traditions. From this several hundred-metre-long road stems a slightly hipster atmosphere in the heart of the Japanese countryside. There is a bicycle shop selling top-of-the-range products. The Magnum Coffee, run by a charming couple, serves homemade coffees in a pretty raw and trendy setting. You can also buy some vegetables from local agriculture, including the famous local edamame. In addition to a bakery, restaurants, an organic institute and a Nipponia hotel, two breweries of artisanal beers have also set up in Fukusumi: Zig-Zag and Tabijino. The Kawaharanosumiyoshi shrine concludes the beautiful walk. The small company Green Cross Road(greencrossroad.tanbasasayama.com) offers guided bike tours from ¥4000 per person.
