TEMPLE SUKYŌJI
This beautiful temple was built in 1392. It is also nicknamed Takuan-dera, after the monk who, called in 1616 by Koide Yoshifusa, feudal lord of the Izushi clan, restored the temple to its grandeur and made it one of the most powerful in the region. Takuan Soho was also the instructor of the great swordsman Musashi Miyamoto. He is also considered to be the creator of daikon (large Japanese radish) pickles, dried and then marinated in rice bran. These had actually been around for a long time, but Takuan popularized them. Even today, the monks continue to make them. The temple also offers visitors the opportunity to participate in several experiences that allow them to immerse themselves even more in the magic and enchantment of the place. A Zazen meditation session, copying a sutra, tracing a Buddhist image, or participating in a tea ceremony, costs ¥3,300 per person. If you wish to be accompanied by an English guide, to enjoy this moment even more, count from ¥4600. As for the place itself, it offers a relaxing and peaceful setting not far from the castle ruins. The garden is also a marvel. In every season, whether it is under a white carpet of snow, with the trees glowing red in autumn or with the sound of frogs in summer, it breathes serenity and the visitor enjoys it too.
