EIRAKUKAN
This is the oldest theatre in the Kinki region. Eirakukan opened its doors in 1901 as a theatre offering kabuki, rakugo and other forms of popular Japanese performances. Later, the theater was converted into a movie theater, before finally closing down in 1964. For more than 40 years, it was abandoned, before finally being restored between 2006 and 2008 to its former glory. Today, one can once again hear the spectators laugh or be moved by watching the shows offered regularly, depending on the programming. The highlight of the season is undoubtedly early November, when nationally renowned kabuki actors come to perform on this mythical stage. The hall is packed and you have to book your tickets in advance. When there are no performances scheduled, the theatre is open to visitors. You will discover its large stage, overhung with lanterns, above which hang period advertisements for the city's shops, some of which are still open today. In the basement, one can enjoy watching the ingenious mechanism of the stage rotation and the elevator to make the actors appear and disappear. To visit this place is to go back 100 years and find a certain atmosphere of the past. To immortalize this pleasant moment, visitors can take a picture of themselves on the stage and feel, for a moment, a kabuki artist.
