Built in 1557, this temple is part of the Rinzai sect. It was totally destroyed by fire in 1615, but was rebuilt by priest Takuan in 1617. It is one of the most important temples of Sakai, since it is here that the tombs of Sen no Ryuku and his teacher Takenojo are located. It would also be here that the two masters of the tea ceremony would have trained and developed the art of tea as we know it today. The Karesansui-teien dry garden reflects the spirit of wabi sabi. It was designated a national scenic site in 1983.
