SAKAI PLAZA OF RIKYU AND AKIKO
This recent museum, which has become a must-see in Sakai, retraces the history of two great Japanese figures from the city. The first is Sen no Rikyu, Japan's greatest master of tea ceremony, known for having developed the culture of chanoyu in the 16th century. He studied tea ceremony under a Sakai merchant prince, Takeno Jōō, and served as master of ceremony under two warlords and unifiers of Japan, Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. At the same time, Sakai was an important commercial port, earning it the nickname "Japanese Venice". The exhibition ends with a documentary film about the artisans of Sakai. The second personality presented in the museum is Akiko Yosano, a great writer, a pioneer of modern Japanese literature at the beginning of the 20th century. It is also possible to visit the Tai-an room, a faithful reproduction of the last remaining tea ceremony room created by Sen no Rikyu, the original of which, designated the National Treasure, is located in the city of Oyamazaki, Kyoto Prefecture. Finally, one can participate in a tea ceremony experience. The museography is very modern and enjoyable and the museum provides touch-sensitive tablets free of charge, allowing you to receive all information in English. Visiting this museum means learning more about the history of the city and the personalities that have shaped what it is today.
