Kofun are burial mounds containing the tombs of important personalities, built between the 3rd and5th centuries in Japan. Their sizes vary, up to more than 400 m long for the largest, as well as their shapes: round, square or keyhole. In Sakai, nearly 100 kofun have been built. There are 49 kofun left today, grouped together on less than 2 km. Nintoku-tenno-ryo kofun, built in the5th century, is the most important of the region. With its 486 m long, it is the largest keyhole-shaped mound in the world. The Mozu-Furuichi kofun complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 for its outstanding universal value. Walking around the kofun complex is like walking along a small island, covered with vegetation and surrounded by a canal. To better understand the importance of this unique heritage, visit the Sakai City Museum. There are haniwas (pottery representing vases, houses or animals), bronze accessories and weapons found around the kofun. It is also an opportunity to discover what a kofun really is thanks to the various explanatory panels. We gradually become aware of the history of these giants of the earth who keep many secrets, since archaeological excavations inside them have been banned. The shape of the place can be appreciated by climbing from the twenty-first floor of the Town Hall at Sakai-Higashi station.
