Mikobata was a silver mine from 1878 to 1917, then a mineral processing centre from 1917 to 1987 before being abandoned. It is recognized as a national treasure of the department of Hyōgo. The visit begins with the former house of Emile Théophile Mouchet, a French engineer appointed by the Meiji government to the Ikuno mine in 1871. Outside, the remains of the mines can be seen, although it is forbidden to approach them for safety reasons. One can also see the 1 yen densha (the 1 yen train) that used to take workers into the mine.
