LEXINGTON BATTLE GREEN
Site to relive one of the most important moments in American history, and where the Lexington militia trained
Are you ready to relive one of the great moments in American history? It was on this site, now a peaceful public garden dominated by the beautiful bell tower of First Parish in Lexington Church, that the very first confrontation of the American War of Independence took place, during the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, which pitted British troops against American patriots. To everyone's surprise, the battle turned to the advantage of the latter and was the prelude to the siege of Boston which lasted 11 months and during which the American colonists were able to build up a real army by blocking the British in the city.
Before the beginning of the conflict, it was also the training ground for the Lexington militia, the famous Minutemen. A bronze statue of John Parker, the militiaman who commanded the Patriot troops, was erected in the park to pay tribute to them. During your walk, you will probably see characters dressed in soldiers' clothing: they are rangers who are there to answer all your questions. If you wish, they can give you a short guided tour of the Lexington Battle Green and a summary of the events that took place that day in April 1775. They are present from early spring to late autumn. Every April 19, on Patriots' Day, the park's lawn is stormed by hordes of costumed people who re-enact the battle.
