DUOMO LA COLLEGIATA
Cathedral of San Candido, a well-preserved Romanesque marvel, the largest in the Eastern Alps.
San Candido Cathedral is a well-preserved Romanesque gem, the largest in the Eastern Alps. And one of the oldest: construction began in 1143. San Candido became an important pilgrimage destination. Around 1280, the collegiate church was generously enlarged to its present form. The bell tower was not added until around 1320. Inside, you'll note the 17th-century Baroque alterations that buried the original Romanesque art until its restoration in 1969: the crypt was rebuilt, and the dome fresco uncovered.
