The sheep festival coincides with the pilgrimage to Mecca. The wealthiest Saudis sacrifice a 5-year-old camel.
Eid al-Adha means "the great festival". It commemorates the sacrifice of Ibrahim (Abraham for Christians and Jews) to his God. Ibrahim agreed to sacrifice his son at the request of Allah, who sent the archangel Djibril (Gabriel) to substitute a sheep for the child at the last moment. Muslims sacrifice a 6-month-old sheep, a goat or a 2-year-old cow. The more affluent even sacrifice a camel which must be 5 years old. The festival falls on the 10th of the last month of the year, which is also the month of the hajj, the great pilgrimage to Mecca.
