On September 23, Saudis wrap themselves in their flags and go to the fireworks displays scheduled throughout the country.
Known as al-Yaum al-Watani, Saudi Arabia's national holiday is celebrated with great fanfare every September 23 to commemorate the unification of the country in 1932. If September 23 falls on a Friday or Saturday, the holiday is given on the Thursday before or the Sunday after. On the occasion of this holiday established in 2005, the Saudis bring out the flags. Folk festivals with traditional dances and music are held, fireworks are set off and the Saudi Falcons perform an aerial parade.
