Riyadh's historic district, home to ruins of ancient palaces and mud-brick houses.
The Riyadh Development Commission began restoring certain buildings in the capital's historic district in 1995. These include the Murabba Palace and Masmak Fortress. Between these buildings lies the old quarter, barely visible between the newer buildings on the main thoroughfares. It's well worth walking between the two areas, taking in the dusty alleyways. Here, mud-brick houses and the ruins of ancient palaces still lurk.
