UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

The country's oldest university, established in 1948, which has seen the Nobel Prize for Literature, Wole Soyinka, the writers Chinua Achebe and Ken Saro-Wiwa and Minister Kayode Fayemi pass through its ranks. Initially created as a College of the University of London, the IU became independent in 1962 and consists of many slightly old buildings, but surrounded by greenery. It is home to IFRA, the French Institute of African Studies, which is very active in the country in the human and social sciences: its researchers, some of whom are French, are keen on history and culture in the country. Still related to research, the University includes a botanical garden, and a zoo visited by schools in the region with giraffe, lions, hyena, some gorillas, antelopes and ostriches, all quite sad....
