CHURCH-FORTRESS OF SANTA MARÍA D'UJUÉ
Romanesque church with Romanesque sculptures, at the top of Ujué, with a fortress-like appearance with its crenellated towers
Perched on the top of Ujué, this Romanesque church looks like a fortress with its crenellated towers, solid buttresses, and the parapet walk added by King Carlos II in the 14th century. Of note inside is the statue of the Virgin of Ujué (12th century), one of the oldest Romanesque sculptures in Navarre, which is the object of a traditional procession at the end of April. Another jewel of the church is its south portal, built in the 14th century, a marvellous example of Navarrese Gothic.
