The Allentown Art Museum was founded in 1934 by impressionist painter Walter Emerson Baum, born in the city of Sellersville 20 miles away. Initially, seventy impressionist paintings by local artists were on display, but the collection has grown over the years and today the museum has more than 13,000 works: European paintings, sculptures and American art, including the portrait of Ann Penn Allen, the daughter of the Allentown founder, by Gilbert Stuart in 1795.
