ZONA ARQUEOLOGICA LA QUEMADA
Area on a rocky promontory with beautiful views with platforms or terraces including the Salón de las Columnas, places on top
The site as it is visited today is 250 meters high on a rocky promontory. It is in fact only the centre of more than 220 structures scattered around the area. The weather has long since washed away the earth and lime covering of the buildings, and then the conquerors took great pleasure in taking away the stones to build the haciendas of the surrounding area. Nevertheless, more than forty platforms or terraces of different sizes can still be seen on this long hill. The first one that can be accessed leads directly to the most emblematic part of the site: the Salón de las Columnas. From here, one can access the fortress by means of monumental stairs that lead directly to the remains of an ancient labyrinthine building (the cuartel) and then to the top of the hill; or one can go directly to the Piramide Votiva by crossing the Juegode Pelota field. From there, much steeper stairs lead to the path to the top. From the large plazas bristling with buildings at the top, you can continue to climb even higher along a path you must discover, climbing over large rocks. The 360-degree view is breathtaking, both of the city you have just visited and of the unrestored remains of the city, which are spread out further up a hill that can also be reached by a path that starts from the Piramide Votiva.
