MISSION CATHOLIQUE
In the centre of Bunkeya near the small market is the beautiful and imposing red brick church of St Andrew and Julius, built by the Benedictines in 1933 and recently renovated. Behind it is the old mission where the priests still live, but a whole section of it is almost in ruins, waiting for funding for renovation. It is nevertheless possible to stay in two decent rooms in a basic comfort and to eat there by ordering in advance. Not far away is the beautiful convent, now occupied by a few Carmelite sisters, also built in the 1930s by the Benedictines (the first in Congo). But we can't stay there.
