MORNING SPAI
Espai Matiners is an interpretation centre for the Matiners' War (1846-1849), often referred to as the Second Carlist War, and the soldiers' tower, a remnant of that period of conflict that revolutionised Catalan military communication systems in the 19th century. In addition to the history of the Matiners and the battle of Avinyó between them and the army of Isabella, daughter of King Ferran VII of Spain, in November 1848, the centre explains how optical telegraphy coding techniques worked.
Fira del Matiners. Every year, during the second week of May, uniformed fighters invade Major Square to stage the famous Battle of Avinyó. On November 16, 1848, the Carlist insurgents surprised Queen Isabella's troops, signing one of the few Carlist victories against the liberalist camp. Markets, tastings of local products, music and popular dances enliven the village.
