BALSARENY CASTELL
Although Balsareny Castle was first mentioned in a historical document of 966, it was in the 14th century, under the reign of King Pere III the Ceremonious, that it took on its present appearance. It reveals a style typical of Catalan civil Gothic style. Situated on a 420-metre high hill, this pentagonal fortification crowned with merlons is organized around a central patio, the most noble rooms being distributed in the upper part of the residence. In the centre of the courtyard, an old cistern was used to collect rainwater. Next door, the Romanesque chapel of the Mare de Déu del Castell, with a central nave closed by a semicircular apse from the 13th century, is a fine example of a Romanesque chapel, to which a Baroque chapel was added in the 17th century.
