TALAMANCA CASTLE
Built in the 10th century, Talamanca Castle preserves two elements of its primitive era, namely the base of its circular tower and part of the original wall. In the 12th century, the Talamanca family took possession of the building, giving the castle, as well as the village, their current name. Endowed with a strategic position, it was partly destroyed during the Battle of Talamanca, which opposed the Catalan army to Philippe V's troops (Bourbon) led by the Duke of Montemar during the War of Succession. The Marquis de Castellbell, who inherited the building in the 18th century, rebuilt the castle as a large fortified residence. Nowadays, it houses the Talamanca Interpretation Centre.
At the foot of the castle, a belvedere offers an eloquent view of the green panoramas that surround the village and the strategic points of the Battle of Talamanca. The 1714 memorial, installed on the belvedere, pays tribute to the Catalan army and the Marquis of Poal: every year, on 13 August, the inhabitants of the village commemorate the Battle of Talamanca here during a civil ceremony.
