MONESTIR DE SANTA MARIA DE L'ESTANY
The monastery of Santa Maria de l'Estany, a true jewel of Catalan Romanesque art, was founded in 1080 and is one of the main canonical abbeys in the country where a community of Augustinian canons lived. The whole is very well preserved: the Romanesque and Gothic style Santa Maria church, the various monastic outbuildings, but above all the superb Romanesque cloister. The capitals of its north wing, sculpted from the 12th century onwards (the oldest gallery), illustrate the life of Christ, from birth to Calvary, as well as allegories of humanity's redemption. The episodes of the flight to Egypt, the Lord's Supper and Jesus' entry into Jerusalem must be highlighted. The guided tour is recommended to understand the iconography of the capitals in detail.
