It is a gravity dam built in 1958. The lake is a popular place for locals to picnic or canoe. The site is home to a nature reserve, the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, where one can observe Indian bison (gaur), bear, Nilgiri tahr, elephant, langur... Mount Agasthyarkoodam (1,868 meters), the second highest peak in Kerala, is located within the sanctuary. The site also houses a lion park (Lion Safari Park) and a crocodile farm (Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre).
