Comporta is located about 100 kilometres south of Lisbon. It is a real little corner of paradise, long known as the place of refuge for the intelligentsia lisboète. Today, it is the jet set that regularly goes there, but don't get me wrong, the city and the region around it have managed to keep the authentic character of Portugal. With the arrival of the sunny days, enjoy a getaway under the sign of tradition, the wild, in an environment that never ceases to surprise between land and sea
Immersion in a village that is traditional
When you arrive in Comporta, you are first surprised and then delighted to discover a village with a style that is very far from the small towns that attract a select population. Here there are no big hotels or billboards to promote what there is to see and do around here. Instead, there are houses with a rustic appearance. Then we meet here and there fishermen and farmers, who come to chat and have a drink at the local café. You don't put your suitcases in the hotel room of a large chain, but you prefer to settle in a Casa Na Areia, which literally means "a house with your feet in the sand". A symbol for anyone who wants to disconnect from everyday life and above all to escape from an overload of modernity. At mealtime, which are intended to be staggered, in Comporta we have lunch around 4pm and dinner around 10pm, we open the door of a small traditional restaurant and enjoy fish, seafood and a glass of rosé from the region. We forget the stress, we take the time and we simply enjoy the good things and the best Portugal has to offer
An environment conducive to multiple activities
At a time when the beaches of Lisbon and the Algarve are filling up with an ever-growing crowd, those eager for tranquility and width prefer to join Comporta to relax on the immense wild beaches, bordered by dunes and where the colour of the ocean sails between blue and emerald. There are three beaches not to be missed in the area: Pego beach, Carvalhal beach and finally Comporta beach. In these places, tranquility is a must and you can choose between endless walks, idleness on the sand or surfing for sportsmen. There are many ways to discover the beauty of the region's nature. You can take a bike, walk a hiking trail or ride a horse to cross rice fields, swamps, salt flats or find yourself in the middle of the pleasant scents of pine forests. Losing yourself in a preserved nature is a key activity in Comporta. Nor should we ignore the moments dedicated to culture. At the Museu do Arroz, an old mill helps to understand how rice arrived in the region and how it has become an essential product of local cuisine. This is easily noticed during gourmet breaks in small restaurants
Another place to see is absolutely essential, also in connection with gastronomy and more particularly the salting of fish. These are the Roman ruins of Tróia. Built in the first half of the 1st century, the place today reveals former thermal baths, houses, factories, a necropolis or a mausoleum. An exceptional site which has been classified as a National Monument since 1910 and which extends over a hundred metres.
