LEFEBVRE BARRACKS
Former military barracks, an impressive monument in the eyes of passers-by in Mulhouse.
An impressive landmark in the city of Mulhouse, this former military barracks is unmistakable to passers-by. At one time the embodiment of the new Prussian power that built it between 1874 and 1877, and the obligatory stop-off for military service after the war, the Lefebvre barracks has known dark times for many years. Now a wasteland, it was converted to mid-range social housing in 2011 by SERM (Société Industrielle de la Région Mulhousienne), now known as CITIVIA. CITIVIA successfully met this challenge, as the atypical building now comprises 108 two- to four-room apartments. A site that once again bears witness to French Manchester's ingenuity in breathing new life into exceptional sites steeped in history.
