The museum is housed in a restored 20th century house that is part of the National Register of Historic Sites. It once belonged to Charlotte Hyde, daughter of a rich local industrialist, and her husband Louis. After Charlotte's death in 1964, the house was opened to the public according to her last wishes. The collections include historical furniture, French and Italian paintings by Botticelli, Raphael and Matisse, and works by American artists.
