THIRUMAYAM FORT
Imposing 40-hectare fort built in 1687 overlooking the town of Thirumayam and the surrounding area, featuring 2 rock-cut temples
This imposing 40-hectare fort was built by the raja of Ramda, Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, in 1687. Majestically overlooking the town of Thirumayam and the surrounding area, it was renovated from top to bottom by the Archaelogical Survey of India in 2012. Only four of the original seven concentric walls remain. A British cannon sits on top. At the foot of the hill are two magnificent rock-cut temples: one dedicated to Shiva dating from the 7th century, another dedicated to Vishnu dating from the 8th century.
