With no fixed date, the Eyo Festival takes place upon the death of the Oba of Lagos, or of a significant figure in the city. It has also been held on the occasion of major events, such as the Festac exhibition in 1977 or the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1956. The Festival, sometimes called Adamu Orisha Play, has become one of Lagos' emblems, and you will see representations of these white hooded figures - the Eyo, representing the spirits of the ancestors - all over the city. On the week-long D-Day festival, thousands of people dressed in white walk and sing in the streets of Lagos from the Oba Palace, Iga Iduganran, located in the heart of Lagos Island. The last edition was held in 2017, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the State of Lagos, created on 27 May 1967.
