SUSANNE WENGER'S HOUSE
Like its art, Susanne's house is an imposing two-storey Gothic structure, buried under the bougainvilleas. A carved stone staircase precedes the square, where pillars, stone and wooden statues are intertwined, all carved in a complex way and flanked by a cactus tree. All this only augurs well from the inside of the house, where everything is made of intriguing sculptures, to the biscornu wooden staircase that leads to the first floor. The artist's last residence from 1958 until his death, the house was a studio and a cultural crossroads for the city's artists, now inhabited by Susanne's two adopted children, one an artist and the other a priestess.
On the first floor, you will find pottery, tin objects and wooden sculptures. Nice view of the city's ochre sheet metal roofs through the window. If you have an eye, look for the remains of bloody feathers on the pottery, remnants of religious sacrifices. It is in this setting full of history and symbols that you are seated on metal chairs to interact with one of the artist's adopted children, who will tell you more about Susanne and her work. More than thirty artists have been trained by the Austrian priestess.
In the workshop and shop adjacent to the house, adorable little sculptures of chubby gods - Osunlele and Sangolele - in stone for sale.
