The sacred rocks of Hunza are one of the first petroglyph sites found along the ancient Silk Road. They are located between the Hunza River and the Karakoram Highway, and date back more than a thousand years. They are made up of four main rocks. Travellers and merchants travelling along the Silk Road had become accustomed to engraving messages in the rock for future people who would use the same road. These petroglyphs written in Bactrian, Sogdian, Kharoshti, Tibetan, Chinese and Brahmi illustrate the diversity of cultural exchanges that have crossed this region. The name Haldeikish means "place where many ibex live".
