ATTABAD LAKE

The lake is located just before the entrance to the village of Gulmit. It was created by a landslide on January 4, 2010 that blocked the flow of the Hunza River for five months. Thousands of people have had to leave their villages gradually swallowed up by the waves, and find refuge in the surrounding villages. The flooding caused by the blockage had also covered the Karakoram road. Today, the lake is 21 kilometres long and more than 330 metres deep. Thanks to its unique blue waters and the majestic mountains that surround it, it has become one of the major tourist attractions of the region. Boat trips or jet-ski tours are available. Small gargotes have settled there offering food and drink.
