CARPET CENTER

The Carpet Center was created by KADO, a local NGO, in 1997 to provide work for women in the region. It is located in a traditional Wakhi house, dating back about 400 years, and whose ceiling is supported by four engraved wooden pillars, decorated with capitals themselves finely engraved. In the centre of the room a kind of bukhari stove is used for heating in winter, but also for cooking all year round. Around it are three elevated platforms called razh, which serve as a resting place during the day and turn into beds at night. The ceiling has an opening in the middle to let out the smoke caused by the use of the stove. Four looms are arranged in the small main room, the floor is covered by sharmas with traditional patterns made of yak hair. It is better to go with a local guide so that you can enjoy the presentation of the place that the women who work there can give you. All products are for sale.
