The museum is located just next to the Marco Polo Hotel in an old traditional Wakhi house with mud walls and a carved wooden door.
King Bhadur Khan built the museum in the mid-1980s to preserve the region's cultural heritage. Some artifacts were donated by the inhabitants of the valley, others come from his own family collection. Among them are: a five-star gold rifle, which would have wounded a British commander in 1891, a copper tea kettle, polished with silver that belonged to Mughal Queen Noor Jahan, an ibex horn, jewellery, traditional clothing, war objects, musical instruments, cooking utensils..
