Modern seaside resort with a small archaeological museum in the town of Marmari.
10 km from Marmari, the city of Karystos is a pleasant and modern seaside resort with a beautiful promenade leading from the town hall to the seafront, interesting shopping streets and a small archaeological museum. Don't miss its kastro (Castello Rosso or Kokkinokastro), perched in the middle of the surrounding villages. Built and fortified by the Byzantines in 1030, it was taken by the Franks in 1295 and bought by the Venetians in 1359. It was not until 1833, with the departure of the Ottomans from southern Greece, that the castle's doors were opened to the Greeks.
