NAM NAO NATIONAL PARK
The huge Phetchabun National Park, covering almost 1,000 km², is remarkable for its rich variety of flora and fauna.
From the Phetchabun region, you can access this immense national park of almost 1,000 km², established in 1972. Dense forests; plains bristling with clumps of bamboo and pine; numerous waterfalls; caves... This is one of the parks with the most varied flora and fauna. Among the animals likely to be spotted are Asiatic bears, gibbons and macaques (the latter in very large numbers), a few elephants, leopards and even tigers, although it is doubtful that the latter will be seen, if indeed they have survived. They have probably been exterminated, as have the so-called "Sumatran" rhinoceroses, whose last observed specimens date back to the early 1970s! This situation can be explained by the extreme poverty of the region's inhabitants, who use every means at their disposal to survive. In addition, forest rangers are few in number, and their low salaries make them vulnerable to temptation. However, in recent years, under pressure from international NGOs, progress has been made in genuinely protecting the animals in Nam Nao National Park. Poachers are punished more severely than before. An exhibition room, open to the public, traces the progress of this daily struggle and its results. A collection of weapons and traps, more or less homemade, confiscated from offenders is on display. There are 3 restaurants at the visitors' center, and bungalows are available on site.
