GEORGIAN BAY ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK
It's the world's largest freshwater archipelago, no less. Don't miss: the wilderness camping experience on Beausoleil Island.
The fantastic Georgian Bay Islands National Park is only accessible by boat or plane. Île Beausoleil, by far the largest of the 59 islands that make up the park on the Huronia border, is the only one that can truly be explored from shore to shore. It's a hiker's delight, with a dozen trails offering views over emerald waters. It comprises two distinct natural regions: to the south, the vast hardwood forest stretching over flat terrain; to the north, the Canadian Shield with its bare rocks and wind-sculpted white pines.
Access: Those wishing to travel on the DayTripper must go to the park's wharf, located in the village of Honey Harbour. Shuttle service is available between Honey Harbour and Beausoleil Island (CAN$24.96 per person, reservations must be made online or by calling +1 888 773 8888), from mid-May to mid-October. Only half-day visitors can take the DayTripper. Campers can take a water cab (see website for contact details).
Lodging: It's possible to camp in the wild on Beausoleil Island, or take advantage of the extra services (flush toilets, showers, drinking water) at the Source aux Cèdres campsite. The latter, like Christian Beach, also offers ready-to-camp cottages and tents for rent. Reservations are essential to secure a spot.
