Sanctuary with a chapel of Bellula considered a place of pilgrimage for the inhabitants
This ancient religious centre, once a place of pilgrimage for the inhabitants of Vallès Oriental, is linked to the legend of the Virgin of Bellulla. A story that dates back to the 13th century. According to the legend, a shepherdess followed an ox that had strayed from its herd to the mountain of Bellulla, where it began to mysteriously dig into the earth. The peasants of Canovelles saw in this act a divine sign. They then went to the site where they discovered a dry well at the bottom of which was the statue of the Mare de Déu de Bellulla. It was here that they consecrated the chapel of Bellulla. Known for its miracles, the Virgin of Bellulla was the object of great veneration in the Vallès Oriental. Many pilgrims came to the chapel in the hope of curing eye diseases (the Virgin of Bellulla is the protector of vision). The statue of the Virgin of Bellulla that rested in the sanctuary is said to have disappeared during the Civil War.
