ESGLÉSIA DE SANTA MARIA DE LLERONA
Latin cross church on a hill in Franqueses del Vallès with a Romanesque portal
Llerona is one of the five urbanisations in the municipality of Les Franqueses del Vallès. Its church is located on a hill in front of a pretty little square planted with olive trees. It was first mentioned in 990 and it still has its Romanesque portal. The Latin cross building is flanked by two apses and covered with a cross vault. The main body was fortified during the 15th century, giving the whole an almost military appearance. This is especially noticeable in the defensive towers above the side apses and at the base of the building. The choir and sacristy were annexed in the 16th century and the side chapels a century later. To the left of the transept, the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament was added in 1900. The church of Santa Maria de Llerona is said to have been erected on the site of an ancient Roman villa.
