ESGLÉSIA DE SANTA MARIA
Church with a finely carved baroque portal and a high square bell tower decorated with zoomorphic gargoyles
The current church of Cardedeu dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, although the first mention of the building dates back to the 11th century. It preserves a Romanesque wall with stone arches and a window from that period. The high square bell tower is decorated with zoomorphic gargoyles and crowned with Catalan battlements. Then, stop for a moment to contemplate its finely carved baroque portal: it shows the figure of the Virgin of the Assumption, patron saint of the municipality, supported by a Renaissance-style entablature featuring two angels supporting the coat of arms of the municipality. The main door is framed by two caryatids, youth on the left and old age on the right.
