CASTELL DE VILAMAJOR
Fortified castle with its ancient sanctuary and miraculously preserved red tower
Note the high tower that dominates the historic centre. It is known as the "Red Tower" (Torre Roja) because of the reddish colour of its ashlar walls. A vestige of the Romanesque period, it is said to have belonged to the old Vilamajor Castle, a holiday palace erected by the Counts of Barcelona from the 11th century onwards, although some historians claim that it corresponded to the bell tower of the old church. King Alfons I of Catalunya is said to have been born in this fortified castle, which was almost completely destroyed in the earthquake of 1448. Together with its former sanctuary, it made up the "La Força" complex. The red tower was miraculously preserved. Part of the castle walls, as well as the Torre Can Vila and the Torre Negra, have also survived.
