POUS DE GLAÇ DE CAN GURRI
Snow wells storing blocks of ice that are then sold in Barcelona in summer
Two snow pits that were once used to store ice. These circular and vaulted constructions were particularly common during the Little Ice Age, between the beginning of the 14th and the end of the 19th century, a period that saw a series of long, cold winters.
The first mention of the ice pits at Lliçà de Vall dates back to 1765. The snow collected in winter was stored in blocks and sold in Barcelona in summer. The blocks of ice were transported at night. The best-preserved (and largest) well has a perimeter of 35 metres and a depth of 9 metres. You will be able to visit the interior. Next to it is a smaller well that has lost its dome. Every year, at the end of October, the inhabitants of the village celebrate the "Festa del Glaç", a popular fiesta with a farmers' market, a craft fair and different events to celebrate the rural world.
