SANCTUAIRE FUTAMI OKITAMA (MEOTO-IWA)
This shrine is famous because of its close connection with the Ise Shrine. It is indeed here that pilgrims came to purify themselves before going there. Even today, it is a pleasure to discover Futami Okitama, which is reached by a path literally wedged between the sea and the rocks. The shrine is dedicated to marital happiness and road safety, and there are many stone frogs representations here and there. Why this batrachian? In Japan, the frog is associated with returning home safely, a symbolism closely linked to the protection of travelers. The frog is said to be able to return to its pond no matter how far it travels. From the Futami Okitama Shrine, visitors can also appreciate the Meoto Iwa, one of the iconic images of the region. This pair of rocks, 700 meters offshore, seems to emerge from the water. Adorned with a torii gate and a thick straw rope connecting them, these rocks symbolize the gateway to the shrine. From May to July, especially during the summer solstice, the sunrise aligns between the two rocks, attracting many worshippers and photography aficionados. In winter, it is the full moon that adds its final touch to this most idyllic picture. This visit is even more popular for Japanese couples who like to go there to wish each other happiness and longevity.
