L'ÎLE DES PERLES MIKIMOTO
The Mikimoto Pearl Island, a true flagship attraction of the city of Toba, could be defined as the sanctuary of the region's pearl culture. This culture can be attributed to the Japanese businessman, Kokichi Mikimoto, who, for the first time in 1893, succeeded in cultivating pearls, a real feat at that time. The island, accessible on foot via a bridge, offers a wide range of activities on the theme. The museum provides a better understanding of pearls thanks to numerous explanations, practical applications and various objects. It should be noted that the pearl is composed of thousands of layers of calcium carbonate crystals. You can learn about the process of forming a pearl from creation to production, a process often unknown to the general public, as well as the selection of a pearl, between its brilliance, texture, size and shape, which determine its final value. The collection presented within these walls is also quite unique in Japan, thanks in particular to extremely rare pieces that have been exhibited in the 20th century all over the world. Mikimoto's pagoda, made entirely of pearls, for example, was exhibited in Philadelphia in 1929, to the great pride of its creator. But the visit to the island doesn't stop there. Visitors can also visit the Kokichi Mikimoto Memorial Hall to learn more about the Japanese businessman. A demonstration by Ama divers is also on the program.
