With an impressive 30-meter wall on its western flank, the highest in Japan, Iga Ueno Castle was originally erected in the late 16th century as a residence for local lords during the Edo period. Destroyed by a storm less than 50 years after its construction, it was only rebuilt in 1935 with the funding of one resident. Wood has been preferred to concrete, which gives the place a traditional and friendly atmosphere. The surrounding park is ideal for beautiful walks, especially in spring with the cherry trees.
